The entire Zone 3 gets about 4 hours of my time per month during the growing season, and most of that is harvesting.

Zone 4: The Semi-Wild Edge—Foraging and Biomass

Zone 4 is the transition between your managed garden and the wild. It extends from 500 to 1,000 feet from your door on larger properties, or it can be as small as a 10-foot strip along a fence line on a city lot. In Zone 4, you plant things that need almost no care but provide biomass for compost, habitat for beneficial insects, and occasional forage. You visit Zone 4 once a month or less. I use my Zone 4 primarily for chop-and-drop mulching material and for perennial edibles that are tough enough to fend for themselves.
