Once you’ve chosen cultivars, build a planting schedule. This is the real magic step that most people skip. Use a spreadsheet or even paper, and list: Crop name, cultivar, days to maturity, planting date, frost tolerance (can it handle frost?), and successive planting dates (when you’ll sow the next batch). For zone 6a, my spring spinach goes in on March 15 (14 days before last frost), then again on April 1, April 15, and May 1. Each sowing gives me harvestable spinach 35–45 days later, so I have continuous harvests from late April through June. That’s intentional, not accidental. The crop rotation part is equally important: never plant the same family in the same bed two years in a row. How many spinach plants do you actually need? Most gardeners answer this with “Oh, I don’t know, maybe a lot?” Then they order a full packet (typically 300–500 seeds for large-seeded crops, 1,000+ for tiny seeds like lettuce or carrots). A single packet of spinach is enough to plant an 8-foot × 3-foot bed, which produces 30–50 pounds of fresh spinach over a spring season if harvested continuously. That’s enough for one person for 2–3 weeks. For a household of three people eating greens 4 times per week, you need three of those beds, or about 60–75 lettuce plants total. At 4-inch spacing, that requires about 3 ounces of lettuce seed (one standard packet is 1/4 ounce and covers about 200–250 feet of row at 1-inch spacing; you’d need 4 packets). This sounds tedious, but it’s the difference between ordering 2 packets (wasting seed) and ordering 5 packets (perfect), and it takes about 10 minutes of math.
Make a seed order spreadsheet now. Columns: Crop, Cultivar, Seed Company, Packet Cost, Quantity Needed, Total Cost. Add a “notes” column for anything special (like “needs to start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost” for peppers or “direct sow, don’t transplant” for peas). Once you have the full list, add up total costs. Most spring garden seed budgets for a 400-square-foot garden range from $60–$150 for seeds alone. If you’re spending $300+ on seeds, you’re either growing way more than you need or buying way too many varieties. Edit ruthlessly. Choose one basil variety, not three. Choose one pea variety, not four. You can get experimental next year—this year, focus on doing a few crops really well.
Step 5: Plan Your Season’s Succession and Preservation Strategy
Spring gardens are weird because they’re incredibly productive for about 8 weeks, then they collapse. In zone 6, that window is roughly April 15 through June 10. Everything wants to bolt or mature simultaneously. Your spinach, lettuce, peas, and radishes all hit peak harvest in a 3-week window in mid-May. Then what? Most gardeners harvest frantically, eat what they can, let the rest go to seed, and curse the wastefulness. The solution is building a preservation plan now, before you plant.
Decide what you’ll do with bulk spring harvests. For leafy greens, the options are: eat fresh (limited by how much salad one person can eat), freeze (blanch, cool, pack, freeze—takes 2–3 hours per 5 pounds but preserves them for 9–12 months), or ferment (spinach doesn’t ferment well, but greens like kale and arugula pickle beautifully in a simple vinegar brine). For peas, you can freeze shelled peas (which takes about 30 minutes per 3 pounds harvested, including shelling), blanch and freeze whole snap peas, or eat fresh. I typically plan to freeze about 40% of my spring pea harvest, eat 40% fresh, and let 20% mature fully for seed saving or soup stock. That percentage comes from experience—it’s how much I can realistically process without burning out, and it matches my household’s consumption pattern.
Here’s the practical part: do you have freezer space? If you’re planning to preserve 30 pounds of greens, that requires roughly 15–20 quart-size freezer bags or 6–8 pint-size containers. Do you have ice cube trays if you’re making green smoothie cubes? (Each tray holds about 4 ounces of pureed spinach and takes up minimal space.) These details sound granular, but they’re the difference between having a preservation plan and having spoiled produce.
